Chapter Eighteen
Lucas realised as he sat in his ute in one of the busiest streets in Dubbo, that his idea might just be a little too farfetched and ballsy, even for himself. The clock on the dashboard read 3AM, and he knew at this time of the night was the smallest chance he had of being caught.
He had cased the dealership throughout the day and watched as the salesmanâs and mechanics had wished each other good night, and slowly began to disburse and close up the car lot. He realised fairly quickly that it would be almost impossible to steal a whole car from the carpark, due to the thick concrete bollards that ran along the footpaths that were connected with chains. But that was never his plan. He had an even better idea.
He had snuck away and grabbed a chicken burger, coke and pack of smokes from the service station as the sun had gone down, and had a silent dinner by himself in the ute as he listened to the one day cricket on the radio.
His face and arm both ached terribly. But as he moved his arm forward and backward, he felt like it was beginning to mend, much quicker than his eye socket. As he looked in the mirror, the yellowing and black had dulled, and was now a lighter shade of purple. He wished he knew where that big bikie âBruceâ with the beard lived. Heâd like to show up and really show him who was boss.
He wanted desperately to gain Patâs approval. He knew that over the last two years, as they both processed the loss of Reggie together, that there were good days and bad days, but as time went on, the good outweighed the bad. He was going to show these bikies that he knew what he was doing; he was going to get this BMW back in showroom condition, all without Pat knowing.
He looked left and right down each side of the once busy road and got out of the ute. The night air was warm and muggy, and he had made sure he wore a black t-shirt and black work pants to ensure he wasnât detected. The road was quiet, and he saw no one on the footpaths, and heâd only seen one car in the last thirty minutes. If there was ever going to be a time to do it, now was the time. He crossed the road quickly and walked along the high brick wall of the business next door, and then slowed before he came to the beginning of the dealership. He had tried his best that day to scope out for any cameras, but he couldnât see any. Businesses out here in the bush werenât as security conscious as the big city.
He turned around the edge of the brick wall, and stepped over the chains which were connected to the concrete bollards and did his best to skirt the high, white painted wall along the edge of the car park.
